Orthodontic treatment has improved my life in ways that go way beyond just making my smile look better. A lot of people think braces or Invisalign are only for looks, but my experience showed me that it can really affect your confidence, health, and even how you see yourself. Before I started Invisalign, I had a noticeable snaggle tooth that made me feel really self conscious. I didn’t like smiling with my teeth showing because I was worried people would notice it. Most of the time, I would smile with my mouth closed or try to hide my teeth in pictures.

When I first got Invisalign, I thought I was just going to end up with straighter teeth. I didn’t expect how much it would change the way I felt about myself. As my teeth slowly started to move, I became more comfortable smiling in public, taking pictures, and laughing without feeling embarrassed.

One of the most unexpected ways orthodontic treatment changed my life was through its connection to my health. Growing up, I have struggled with Gastroparesis, a stomach condition that affects digestion. Managing this disease required me to become more mindful of what I ate, and Invisalign reinforced that awareness in a very practical way. I quickly became conscious of which foods were easier to eat without making it difficult to clean my teeth or put my aligners

back in afterward. I discovered that gummy candy, sugary drinks, ultra-processed snacks, and heavy, large meals made the process more inconvenient and time-consuming. Not only that, but I also realized these foods were hurting my stomach much more than they were helping. As I slowly began cutting back on them, I discovered that foods like fruits, simple carbohydrates, vegetables, unprocessed proteins, smoothies, and smaller meals were much easier to manage with Invisalign. They allowed me to clean my teeth quickly and consistently maintain my

aligners without stress. More importantly, they also aligned with the dietary changes recommended for my gastroparesis. Without fully realizing it at first, I was quickly healing my gut and stomach issues. Although I had been told before that this type of diet would benefit my condition, it was difficult to fully commit because I enjoyed indulgent foods and struggled to give them up. Invisalign gave me structure and accountability that made those changes easier to follow. I also began to experiment with different foods, found another hobby that I love (cooking and baking) and developed a passion for meal planning and preparing that has stayed with me all this time, all thanks to invisalign.

As I learned more about nutrition and how to better manage my gastroparesis, I started becoming genuinely interested in how food affects the body. I began researching foods that would help both my health and my teeth, and I paid more attention to how different meals made me feel. This growing awareness, along with my experience taking care of my teeth, turned into something much more meaningful than I expected. What started as something I had to do slowly turned into a real interest in nutrition, cooking, baking, and meal planning.

My Invisalign experience and orthodontic treatment even influenced my future career path. Through improving my smile, managing my health, and discovering a passion for nutrition, I realized that I want to help other people who deal with dietary restrictions and health conditions. I am now planning to study Nutrition and Dietetics next year at the University of Delaware, where I will also be running at the collegiate level, so I can help and teach others how to make healthier choices that improve their quality of life. In the end, orthodontic treatment was not just about straightening my teeth or fixing my snaggle tooth. It helped build my confidence, encouraged healthier habits, and pushed me to become more disciplined, while also playing a meaningful role in improving my gastroparesis symptoms.

Most importantly, it pushed me to take better care of myself both physically and mentally, while also shaping a future where I can help others do the same. What started as a simple dental correction and a set of plastic aligners turned into a life-changing experience that still influences me every day. It’s something I never expected, but I’m really grateful for it.
